Like any surgical procedure, circumcision causes pain. WebMD explains that the procedure involves removal of the foreskin (the skin covering the tip of the penis) and takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Circumcision has its origin in ancient civilizations and is today practiced in many parts of the world for religious, cultural and health reasons. The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend circumcision as a routine procedure, according to WebMD. While studies have not conclusively shown that circumcision is necessary, there is increasing evidence that it may reduce such health risks as urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), penile cancer and phimosis, among others.
