What is a Class X felony?

A Class X felony is the most serious offense in Illinois and includes aggravated arson, armed robbery, home invasion and aggravated kidnapping. A person found guilty of a Class X felony cannot be sentenced to probation and jail time is mandatory.
The only crime more serious than a Class X felony in Illinois is first-degree murder. Those convicted of a Class X felony face jail time of between 6 and 30 years. Even first-time offenders must be sentenced to jail time.
Other examples of a Class X felony include, possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, aggravated vehicular hijacking and aggravated sexual assault.
