How does a classic car VIN compare to a muscle car's VIN?

The vehicle identification numbers (VINs) on cars prior to 1981 were used as serial numbers, and this applied to all types of classical cars, including American muscle models. After 1981, the VIN, as it is used today, became prevalent across several automotive manufacturers.
Due to the VIN being used as a serial number, many of the older vehicles requires lengthy detective work in order to find out any history. A prospective buyer can use resources such as community forums or automotive databases which contain information as to what the serial numbers meant. Although the buyer may also have to narrow down specifics for the vehicle.
