Clean a dog's teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste designed for dogs. Start by positioning the dog properly, and gently curl back the dog's lips. Place toothpaste on the brush, and brush all of the dog's teeth using a gentle back and forth motion.
- Apply canine toothpaste to a dog toothbrush
Toothbrushes and toothpaste for dogs are available at veterinary offices and pet supply stores. Dog toothbrushes come in a variety of sizes, so get a large one for big dogs and a small toothbrush for smaller pets. The toothpaste comes in flavors that appeal to dogs. Do not use human toothpaste.
- Position the dog
Pet the dog to calm him. Back him into a large piece of furniture, such as a sofa, to help keep him in position while you are brushing.
- Push the dog's lips back
Curl the top lip up on one side, and push the lower lip back as necessary to access the dog's teeth.
- Brush the teeth
Brush the outside of the teeth with a back and forth motion. Work around the mouth to reach all of the teeth. Gently open the dogs muzzle, and give the inside teeth a quick brush.
- Praise the dog
Spend a few minutes praising and playing with the dog so he considers teeth cleaning a pleasant experience.
