A few different common household items can be used to clean a smelly dishwasher. Owners can often remove smells and stains by wiping the inside of the dishwasher with a paste made from baking soda and water, removing the residue and then running the empty dishwasher through a cycle.
Citric acid, commonly found in lemons, can also be used to clean a smelly dishwasher. Place about 4 tablespoons in the bottom of the dishwasher, and run it through a hot cycle. Vinegar is another household item that can be used to clean a smelly dishwasher by running the machine through a cycle with a cup of vinegar on the top rack.
