A blockage can be caused by the accumulation of cholesterol, fat and other waste, which is called plaque. The risk factors that contribute to carotid artery disease are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and smoking. An advanced stage of carotid artery disease can put a patient at risk for a stroke.
