According to MedicineNet, clonazepam is an anti-anxiety drug in the same category as other benzodiazepines, such as Valium, Xanax and Ativan. Clonazepam is also effective in preventing seizures and is used in conjunction with seizure medication. The brand name for clonazepam is Klonopin, and it is available by prescription only.
MedicineNet states that clonazepam is considered a short-term relief for anxiety symptoms. If clonazepam is taken longer than a few months, stopping suddenly could cause depression, strong mood swings, seizures, vomiting and cramping. A small dosage is used in anti-epileptic treatment to prevent the risk of suicidal tendencies and erratic behavior.
