Are all clothes sold in the United States required to have washing instruction tags?

The Federal Trade Commission requires most types of manufactured clothing sold in the United States to have an attached tag that details care instructions. Some garments are exempt from this rule, including shoes, belts, gloves and hats. One-time-use clothing, such as some medical scrubs, is also exempt from labeling.

Care instructions must be attached to all clothing as well as all material used in the manufacture of clothing. Clothing that is manufactured overseas and then imported needs to have care tags attached before vendors make it available for sale in the United States. At minimum, care labels must include instructions for washing and drying the garment.
