What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing is the use of programs hosted on a Web-based service. A network of large computers that form the cloud handles the storage and function of a program that would otherwise create a heavy workload for a smaller computer.

The reduction of necessary memory for storage and processing to run programs allows a local computer to function more efficiently. A common example of cloud computing is the use of an email service, in which neither an email program nor saved emails are stored on a local computer. Dedicated servers that make up the cloud allow access to programs for a variety of platforms including business, social media and gaming.
