While sesame or sunflower oil can be used for oil pulling, using coconut oil also provides the benefits of lauric acid, states WebMD. Lauric acid contains anti-microbial agents, and coconut oil may also prevent tooth decay.
When oil pulling with coconut oil, it is best to begin with five minutes a day, recommends WebMD. The most effective time is 20 minutes, but five to 10 minutes still benefits the mouth. Gentle swishing, sucking and pushing the oil through the teeth is all that is required. Coconut oil should not be swallowed while oil pulling, and spitting it down the sink could clog pipes. It is still necessary for an individual who oil pulls to brush, floss and maintain routine dental visits.
