There is some limited evidence that oil pulling with coconut oil can inhibit plaque formation, says Cleveland Clinic. However, there is no scientific evidence that it will improve ailments such as diabetes or other chronic conditions, despite what the proponents say.
Oil pulling with coconut oil can be beneficial to oral health, thanks to the anti-microbial qualities of lauric acid, a component in coconut oil, according to WebMD. Oil pulling also might help reduce gingivitis and the microorganisms that cause bad breath. However, oil pulling is only a supplemental therapy and should not replace brushing and flossing or other routine dental care.
