A person who collects coins is known as a numismatist. Practitioners of coin collecting, or numismatics, may collect ancient and historical coins or modern commemorative coins. Numismatics gained popularity in the United States in the 1930s.
Different collectors search for different types of coins, searching by date, series, theme or nationality. Many countries' mints, including the U.S. Mint, create commemorative coins as collectibles. Collectors may buy coins directly from the mint or from other collectors and coin dealers at auction. Some numismatists prefer to search for coins among circulating coins obtained from banks and at flea market or antique sales.
