Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, one of the pioneers of microbiology, did not attend any formal college. Before his first presentation to the Royal Society in 1673 regarding bee mouth-parts, stings, fungus and a human louse, Van Leeunwenhoek was a surveyor for the city of Delft.

Among Anton Van Leeuwenhoek's discoveries in microbiology was his discovery of bacteria in 1676. This discovery was confirmed in an independent study by Robert Hooke at the Royal Society. During his lifetime, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek made over 500 microscopes for the purpose of object observation and is also credited with the discovery and definition of sperm cells.
