Louis Farrakhan attended Winston-Salem Teachers College for two years. He attended the college due to winning a track scholarship. He originally planned to become an educator, but he left college early to pursue a music and entertainment career.
Born Louis Eugene Walcott, Farrakhan is the leader of the black nationalistic and Islamic movement the Nation of Islam, which follows the teachings of Elijah Muhammed. Before taking the name Louis Farrakhan, he called himself Louis X when he was aligned with civil rights leader Malcolm X.
Farrakhan is an accomplished classical violinist. Before he joined the civil rights movement, he spent time as an entertainer under the names Calypso Gene and The Charmer.
