Who is Louis Farrakhan?

Louis Farrakhan is a minister and the leader of the religious group Nation of Islam. He was born Louis Eugene Wolcott in Bronx, New York on May 11, 1933. Farrakhan, who joined the Nation of Islam in 1955, is a polarizing figure because of his political views and outspokenness.
Farrakhan was minister at mosques in Harlem and Boston when the Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad appointed him the National Representative of the Nation of Islam. Beginning in 1981, Farrakhan opened 130 mosques in America and all over the world. In 1995, he organized the Million Man March in Washington, D.C. to call black men to commit to their families and communities.
