Barry Sanders attended Oklahoma State University, playing for the Oklahoma State Cowboys from 1986 to 1988. After backing up future NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas during his first two years, Sanders took home the Heisman trophy in his final collegiate campaign.

In the record-breaking 1988 season, Sanders rushed for 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns, widely considered one of the best in college football history. His final game for the Oklahoma State Cowboys included 222 yards rushing and five touchdowns in just three quarters of action in a 62-14 Holiday Bowl victory. Sanders then opted to leave OSU prior to his senior season and was selected by the Detroit Lions with the third overall pick of the 1989 NFL draft.
