John Locke never founded a colony, but his teachings and philosophy were inspired by Roger Williams, who founded the colony of Rhode Island on a basis of religious freedom. Locke's philosophy inspired the likes of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton.
Locke was born in 1632 and was raised in a Puritan household. Reading the writings on religious and political freedoms of Roger Williams influenced Locke's philosophy. His most important writings were "Two Treatises of Government," which discussed the natural rights of man, and "A Letter Concerning Toleration, The Reasonableness of Christianity," which dealt with religious freedom and tolerance. He died in 1704.
