Pure anthracite is black in color. It may appear slightly gray if there are impurities present. It is a form of coal and contains a low percentage of volatile substances; it is not to be confused with bituminous coal.
Anthracite is widely used in thermal power stations for generating electricity. It was also used as a domestic fuel before liquefied petroleum gas became common. Anthracite contains up to 98 percent carbon, and this allows it to burn without a flame. It has a high calorific value and makes a good fuel. It does not produce much soot when burned. Pure anthracite is hard and has a metallic luster.
