What color is a healthy puppy's bowel movement?

According to veterinarians, the color of a healthy puppy's bowl movement should be chocolate brown. Depending on the color of the dog food, however, the color may differ slightly. Red streaks in the feces may be from blood, and dark black feces may indicate gastrointestinal bleeding.
Veterinarians are also concerned with the shape and consistency of a dog's bowl movements. If the feces looks like a small stone, it may be a sign of dehydration. The proper consistency of a healthy bowl movement is described as being like dough; overly hard feces may be a sign of constipation. Feces that is too soft may be a symptom of a gastrointestinal-related issue.
