External hemorrhoids are brownish in color according to Hemorrhoids.org. Hemorrhoids are fleshy tissues that occur internally within the rectum or externally at the base of the rectum. According to Everyday Health, 75 percent of adults over the age of 45 suffer from hemorrhoids at some point.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids include anal itching or irritation, swelling around the anus, bright red blood in the stool and rectal pain or discomfort. Hemorrhoids occur when veins in the rectum swell due to pressure caused by chronic diarrhea or constipation, obesity, low fiber diets, anal intercourse and strain during bowel movements, according to the Mayo Clinic.
