What is the color taupe?

Taupe is a brownish-gray color that may contain hits of yellow, purple or green. The exact color is difficult to identify because the word taupe is used to refer to many different shades that contain both brown and gray.

The word taupe is derived from the French word taupe, which means mole. The color name refers to the color of the French mole's coat. There are several variations on taupe, including rose taupe, a shade with hints of pink in it; sandy taupe, a very light shade with hints of yellow or green; and gray taupe, in which the proportion of gray pigment is high compared to the proportion of brown pigment.
