Depending on the type of swimming taking place and skill level of the swimmers, a swimming pool's temperature should be between 82 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit. More competitive swimming, such as training for team events or aerobic swimming exercises, should take place in water around 82 degrees.
Children just learning to swim, and certain water therapy techniques, should take place in water that is between 90 and 95 degrees. For the most common activities, such as recreational swimming, older children and adults learning to swim, diving and low-intensity lap swimming, the ideal temperature is between 86 and 88 degrees. An ideal ambient air temperature would be no higher than 84 degrees.
