Is commitment phobia a male phenomenon?

According to HowStuffWorks, commitment phobia is not limited to males; in fact, it strikes men and women at similar rates. Although the stereotype used to be that men avoided marriage and commitment, career-minded women are just as likely to postpone or avoid marriage.

As reported by the Today Show in 2007, the fastest-growing demographic in the United States is single women. The Census Bureau reports that approximately 22 million single women between the ages of 25 and 44 live in the United States. From 1970 to 2004, the marriage rate dropped from 76.5 marriages per 1000 unmarried women to 39.9, indicating a significant step away from the type of commitment that marriage entails.
