As of 2015, common brands of proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, include Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and Dexilant, according to WebMD. Other brands include Zegerid, Protonix and Aciphex.
Proton pump inhibitors are a class of medicines that treat heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease and gastric ulcers, notes Healthline. They work by reducing the production of stomach acid and allow a damaged esophagus to heal when irritation-causing stomach juices back up through the esophagus. PPIs include omeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole and omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate and come in pill or liquid form. They are widely available by prescription and over-the-counter, and vary in terms of cost.
