Frequent night urination in men can be the result of a variety of factors, including urinary tract infections, prostatitis and dietary indiscretions, according to WebMD. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can be at the root of excessive night urination in males, as can strokes and other neurological diseases.

Enlargement of the prostate is one cause of frequent night urination in males, notes WebMD. When the prostate expands, it puts pressure on the urethra and causes both irritation of the bladder and blockage of urine flow.

Frequent night urination can also be a byproduct of a urinary tract infection, a likely ailment especially when it is observed alongside fever symptoms or abdominal pain, as noted by WebMD.

Diseases such as bladder cancer and its treatment via radiation are also likely causes of frequent night urination, according to WebMD. Damage to nerves due to a stroke also may cause a frequent urge to urinate.

Chocolate, tomato-based products, artificial sweeteners and alcohol are among the dietary reasons associated with frequent night urination, WebMD explains. Avoiding these foods, and liquids in general, before bed can help with the symptoms of frequent urination. Fluid intake less than one to two hours before bedtime can result in the need to urinate several times during the night, according Care2.
