Coxsackievirus belongs to the enterovirus genus, the group of viruses that causes the common viral illness hand, foot and mouth disease. Hand, foot and mouth disease usually occurs in infants and children under 5 years of age, but it can affect adults, states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In most cases, coxsackievirus infections are not serious and cause only mild symptoms, such as fever, rash, sore throat, joint pain and headache, according to Mayo Clinic. Coxsackievirus is more prevalent in summer and fall, and most cases resolve within a week. Symptomatic treatment includes rest, over-the-counter medications for fever control and plenty of fluids.
