Is it common to experience pain after the removal of a ureteric stent?

The Urology Department of the University of Ohio reports that most patients experience little or no pain after the removal of a ureteral stent, also known as a ureteric stent. However, some patients report pain up to two hours after removal, which resolves within a few hours.

A ureteric stent is a flexible, hollow, plastic tube that is inserted into the ureter as a means of shuttling urine directly from the kidney into the bladder, according to the Bristol Urological Institute. This device is designed to combat the obstruction of the ureter by kidney stones, ureter narrowing or even surgical instruments. Failure to resolve obstruction can result in increased kidney pressure and damage.
