What are some common leprechaun myths?

The most common mythological depictions of leprechauns cite a small, old man in either a red or green coat. Common myths say leprechauns are tricksters, mischievous and even dangerous, and that they enjoy making shoes and storing gold they've collected in a pot at the end a rainbow.

Leprechauns, like many traditional fairies, have a distinctive sound associated with them; for the leprechaun, it is the "tip-tap" noise of his cobbler hammer as he makes shoes. This sound announces a leprechaun is near, and that trouble may be afoot. Popular Irish holiday St. Patrick's day involves children trying to catch a leprechaun. Common myths say that leprechauns, when caught, grant their captor three wishes in exchange for their release.
