What are some common problems with septic tanks?

Common problems with septic tanks include excessive water, excessive sludge depth, a buildup of non-biodegradable material in the tank, and growth of algae. One of the most common causes of these problems is a lack of proper maintenance.
Some septic tanks lack the capacity to handle large volumes of water. Slow decomposition and the presence of non-biodegradable matter encourages the waste to build up to undesirable depths. Under these two circumstances, solid waste easily passes out of the tank and clogs distribution pipes.
Detergents contain phosphates that encourage algae to grow in the tank and distribution pipes. Such growth blocks perforations in the tank and results in a buildup of toxic gases.
