What are some common repairs for Atwood water heaters?

A failing pilot light, electrodes that do not spark and foul-smelling hot water are common issues with Atwood recreational vehicle water heaters that require repair. Most such repairs require a certified technician, though amateurs can fix some basic issues.
If the pilot light does not light, replace the thermocouple or gas control magnet. If there is no spark when trying to light the pilot light, clean, adjust or replace the electrodes.
Foul-smelling water is typically the result of a hydrogen and sulfur reaction to the lining on the inside of an Atwood water heater tank, though the smell may also signify bacterial buildup. Flushing the tank with a vinegar solution usually remedies this problem.
