Some common salt water pool problems include corrosion, dying plant life, difficulty maintaining the proper water chemistry and expense. The saline in these pools corrodes pool ladders, posing a safety concern. The saline also wears away at cement contained in pool decks over time.
Grass and other plants do not do well in environments where there is a high saline content. Salt water pools require using a salt water generator, which employs electrolysis to release chlorine gas from the salt. Many owners of salt water pools cite having imbalanced water chemistry as an issue because pool pumps are often not run long enough for the needed amount of chlorine to generate. Contrary to popular belief, salt water pools do not cost any less than traditional chlorinated pools, and can cost more in the long run due to ensued damage.
