Symptoms of a cytomegalovirus, or CMV, infection include jaundice, purple skin splotching, rash and low birth weight, according to Mayo Clinic. Other symptoms include enlarged spleen, inadequate liver function, pneumonia and seizures.

CMV is a virus that can infect anyone, yet most people do not even know they have it because it generally doesn't cause many symptoms, notes Mayo Clinic. The virus is transferred through body fluids, such as blood, saliva, urine and breast milk. Once a patient is infected with the virus, he retains it for life, although it tends to remain dormant as long as the patient is healthy.
