What are the most common types of police corruption?

Gratuities are the most common form of police corruption, according to a lecture outline published at the McGraw Hill Online Learning Center. These may include free meals and discounts on purchases in exchange for extra police patrol. Other, more serious, types of corruption include bribery, theft, brutality and internal corruption.

Although gratuities are the most common form of police corruption, not all departments prohibit them. Gratuities can open the door to more serious corruption and cause officers to believe they are entitled to special privileges, according to "The Police in America," a McGraw Hill Online Learning Center lecture by Samuel Walker and Charles M. Katz.
