What are some common varieties of melon?

Watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew are common varieties of melon. Except for watermelon, melons are all of the same species. Watermelon originated in southern Africa and is grown around the world. It has a uniform pulp inside unlike other melons which are hollow in the center.

Cantaloupe is a type of muskmelon with hard, grooved skin and yellow-orange flesh. Botanists and horticulturists have recently developed smaller bush varieties. Cantaloupe flesh has a sweet distinct flavor. Honeydew melons are round with a pale green to white smooth rind. These melons are especially popular as a dessert choice because of their sweet mild flavor.
