Because Microsoft Office 2000 is a licensed product, downloading it for free qualifies as software piracy and is against the law. Moreover, Microsoft no longer sells Office 2000. As of December 2015, Office 365 is the latest version of Office and is available at Microsoft's website.

Microsoft allows users to download a free trial of the product; the trial lasts for a month and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. A Microsoft account and a credit card are required, but users can cancel the subscription before the trial period ends and not pay anything. Office 365 is compatible with Windows 7 and up, as well as Mac OS X 10.10 and up.
