Do companies offer prepaid electricity?

Prepaid electricity is offered in some areas, but the availability depends on several factors. Advanced electric meters, known as AMS Smart Meters, are necessary to get prepaid electric service. Additionally, not all states allow residents to choose their electric providers.

Some pay-as-you-go electric providers require each customer to provide a cell phone number and an email address so they can notify the customer when her electric service balance falls to a certain level. This is meant to give the customer ample time to add more money to the account. Unlike traditional electric service, prepaid electric usage is monitored on a daily, hourly or quarter-hour schedule using the smart meter.
