Federal securities laws require public companies to disclose financial statements and other information to the public so that prospective investors judge accurately whether a company's securities are a good investment, explains the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, or SEC. Domestic companies' financial statements are available on the SEC website.

Public companies submit their financial statements to the SEC by filling several forms. Form 10-Q contains unaudited quaterly reports. Form 10-K depicts audited annual financial statements. Form 8-K discloses preliminary earnings announcements and other current information. To look up a public company's financials, type the company's name in the text box located on the SEC Edgar database home page, and click on Search.
