What is compartment syndrome?

According to WebMD, compartment syndrome is a condition in which excessive pressure builds up within a certain portion of the body. This pressure impedes the blood flow to the area and causes tissue and cell death if not caught early.

Compartment syndrome most often occurs as a result of an injury. After an injury, blood or fluid may accumulate in one portion of the body and cause the pressure inside that enclosed area to rise dramatically. Patients may feel numbness, pain or tingling in the affected area. The legs, abdomen and the arms are at the highest risk for developing this syndrome, states WebMD.
