What is a confidential informant list?

A confidential informant list is a compilation of police informants’ identities, accompanied by their locations, past criminal activity and other characteristics, reports the New York Times. The individuals listed are suspected to assist various government agencies in identifying sources of illegal activities and organized crime.
In 2007 the website WhosaRat.com caused a lot of controversy among the judicial system states a New York Times article. The website exposed names, mug shots and detailed court documents of 4,300 informers. Who's a Rat offers memberships to those interested in gaining access to the various documents and information regarding both informants and undercover agents.
