The Connecticut River runs from the Canadian border to Long Island Sound and is the largest river in New England. Its 410-mile length starts in Canada and crosses five New England states: Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine.

The Connecticut River is identified as an American Heritage River because of the diverse qualities it lends to the communities it serves. It was named America's first National Blueway in 2012, recognized for successful efforts to restore and preserve the river for future generations through watershed conservation. The Connecticut River is a popular recreational spot for boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and biking.
