The mountain laurel was adopted as the state plant of Connecticut in 1907. It is a shrub that grows up to 20 feet high and 12 feet wide. A member of the blueberry family, the mountain laurel is also kin to azaleas and rhododendrons. It grows best in sun or part sun and in acidic soil. All parts of the mountain laurel are poisonous.
