Generation X births began in the mid-1960s and ended sometime between 1976 and the mid-1980s, though the exact dates are a matter of sociological debate. Generation X is preceded by the Baby Boomers and followed by Generation Y, also known as the Millenials.

Generation X is often associated with negative stereotypes such as being lazy and materialistic; however, studies show that, as adults, Generation X members are more likely to engage in volunteerism than previous generations. They are also highly educated and earn high wages but possess more debt than previous generations, potentially as a result of student loan debt and first-home purchases that coincided with the housing bubble crisis. The generation is also active, politically diverse and family oriented.
