How do you construct a window seat?

To construct a window seat, create a platform from 2-by-4-inch wood boards, position 24 inch high kitchen cabinets on top of the platform, and screw the cabinets to each other, the platform and the wall studs. Complete the look with toe-kick cabinet molding and a custom-sewn cushion.

1. Create a platform for the cabinets

   Align the 18-by-24-inch kitchen cabinets together to create a straight or U-shaped arrangement for the window seat. Take the measurements, and build a platform from 2-by-4-inch wood boards. To secure the platform to the floor, drive in screws at an angle through the outer frame.

2. Install the cabinets

   Position the kitchen cabinets on top of the platform, and screw them together with 2-inch wood screws. To secure the cabinets to the wall, drive 2-inch deck screws through the back panel of the cabinets and into the studs.

3. Cover the platform

   Cut toe-kick cabinet molding to the length of the platform. With 1-inch finishing screws, attach the molding to the platform.

4. Complete the seat

   Cut a seat panel from 3/4-inch plywood to cover the top of the cabinets. If you have a U-shaped seat, secure wood cleats to the wall at the open corners. With 1 1/2-inch wood screws, secure the center panel to the wood cleats or directly to the cabinets to build a straight seat. With 1-inch finishing nails, add ogee trim around the seat panel. Add a cushion to complete the window seat.
