India is a country in South Asia and is located on the Indian subcontinent, the southerly region of Asia that constitutes the core lands of Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. It is situated on the Indian plate, which was part of the ancient continent Gondwana.

The Indian plate split off from Gondwana and became a major continent millions of years ago. Continental drift led it to fuse into the Eurasian and the Australian plates. The collision of the Indian tectonic plate into South Asia lifted the Himalayas mountain range on Earth, home of the world's highest mountain peaks. The plate is still pushing into Asia, causing the Himalayas to continue growing in size.
