Switzerland is located in central Europe. This landlocked country is bordered by Germany and France to the north, Liechtenstein and Austria to the east, Italy to the south and France to the west and southwest. Slightly larger than New Jersey, Switzerland covers an area of 15,942 square miles.
Switzerland is divided into three geographical regions. The Alps comprise 60 percent of Switzerland's area, while the middle lands occupy 30 percent. The sub-alpen Jura Mountains cover the remaining 10 percent.
Bern is the capital of Switzerland, and the largest city in the country is Zürich. Geneva, Lausanne, Basel and Lugano are some other major Swiss cities.
