As of 2015, Copper Canyon in Mexico is a dangerous area as outlined by a travel alert warning released by the U.S. Department of State. The report states that Copper Canyon, along with other portions of the Sierra Mountains, faces serious problems in regards to violence and crime.
The report also states that travelers heading to Copper Canyon should exercise caution when travelling through the area, limit travel to daylight hours, and travel only on major highways. Cities and areas near Copper Canyon are also considered dangerous. These include major cities in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, such as Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua City.
