Dried corn is considered a grain, though fresh corn is sometimes called a vegetable. Corn is not only eaten in large amounts across the United States, but it is also is consumed across the globe.
As a whole grain, corn is very high in vitamin A. It contains more than any other type of grain. As such, it is used as a staple crop in many cultures. Corn accounts for just over 20 percent of what the world eats. In the United States, much of the corn crops go to feeding livestock, such as cows and pigs, while sweet corn is raised for human consumption. Corn in the U.S. originated with the Native Americans.
