In cats, the coronavirus causes feline infectious peritonitis, according to PetMD. Feline infectious peritonitis is an aggressive viral disease in cats that results in a high number of deaths.
PetMD explains that the coronavirus is most often spread through the air and solid waste of an infected cat. The virus can also be transmitted by humans who have come into contact with the virus. It also can stay alive on contaminated surfaces. The virus is difficult to diagnose because there are no visual symptoms. It is equally difficult to prevent, especially if there is an outbreak in a kennel where other animals live.
