What is the correct doorway width for a wheelchair?

Doorways need to be a minimum of 32 inches wide and offer a straight-in approach to accommodate most wheelchairs. Narrow entryways and doors that are located in hallways and other cramped spaces should be 36 inches in width to provide sufficient turning space.

Most doorways provide an opening that is approximately 2 inches narrower then the width of the door. With a direct approach, most common wheelchairs can pass through a 30-inch opening without issue. Due to variations in chair size and entryways that may not provide a straight-in approach, only the person attempting to negotiate a door may be able to determine the exact size and width requirements of a doorway.
