When could women vote?

Women have been able to vote in the United States since Aug. 18, 1920. This is when the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was ratified to allow women the right to vote. It took approximately 70 years of activists fighting for women's rights for them to be allowed suffrage.

The first time women voted was during the election on Nov. 2, 1920, and more than 8 million women in the United States cast their votes. Not every state ratified the 19th Amendment right away, with 12 states taking another 60 years to approve it. The last state to ratify the amendment was Mississippi, doing so March 22, 1984.
